Tour Information

SORRY WE ARE CLOSED FOR THE SEASON

The Carbonate Mine was first opened in the summer of 1896 and remained in production until the late 1950's. Their principle ores were Limonite, a gold bearing mustard colored ore, and Galena, a purplish ore containing lead and silver. On the tour you will see both of these ores in abundance. Also, you will see amazing formations of ice crystals, that have grown to the size of dinner plates in this cool, calm environment.

Tours are picked up just north of the town of Breckenridge. From there we travel by a four wheel drive vehicle up Bald Mountain. Along the way, you will pass several area mines, cabins and mills dating back to the 1880's.

IMPORTANT!

  • The mine is a constant 28 degrees Fahrenheit, so please remember to bring warm clothing.
  • Closed toe hiking footwear is required. The mine may have up to 2 inches of water at the entrance depending on the time of year. You will not enter the mine without closed toe shoes.
  • The first 200 feet of the mine is height restricted to an average of 5 feet from floor to ceiling. Period miners did not waste time removing non-paying rock, so the adit is only big enough for a miner pushing a minecart. It opens up considerably and can be walked in comfort after the first 200 feet.
